A Reckoning

Today's Outfit thumbnail
Today's Outfit A mesmerizing, hypnotic album, structured with repeating chord patterns built on escalating guitars. Jun demonstrates the strength of her voice in tuneful songs like “It’s My Time” and “Hours,” elsewhere bringing a more brazen rock attitude in riffy tracks like “Strawman” and “Superstitious,” the latter one of the record’s strongest cuts. My favorites have to be the gorgeous “Prayer,” its cycling melody ending too soon, and closer “Giver,” a singalong with hooks that linger long after it’s over. Favorite track: Prayer.

about

Re-introducing: Leathered.

Of blood and flesh. Resilient, sanguine, aged. Weathered.
United sonically in a shared admiration of Nick Cave, The Velvet Underground, Sade and The Pretenders, Leathered matches the dark, glam levity of vocalist and guitarist Amanda B. Jun with bassist Edward Anthony's deft R&B-influenced stylings. Together, they explore the tensions laid bare by Carter Logan of SQÜRL's rhythmic work.

A Reckoning arrives years later and right on time. The world is broken, burning – the same as it ever was. In fits and spurts, voices from neglected margins of society are being heard, their outcries finally interrupting our regular programming. This is an era of trauma and pain.

A Reckoning is the band’s aural effort to rebuke the banality of evil, the seductive appeal of apathy and the urge to recoil from opposition. The songs - dry, bemused, melancholy, enraptured - appeal to one’s innate capacity for lightness and joy. The subliminal, healing grace that carries us through struggle. This is a personal reckoning. A sonic reconciliation packaged as dark melodic pop, with the heart and soul of rock & roll.
